3 Top Tips for Saving Energy During Summer

All Posts

In the past, it was normal for people to forget about their energy bills during the summer months, thanks to warmer weather and lighter evenings. However, with costs now rising drastically, we’re all keeping a much closer eye on our usage all year round.

While your energy bills will undoubtedly be higher in winter, there are still some energy-saving measures you can implement throughout the summer to keep your usage and costs low. Keep reading to find out what they are!

Let natural light in

One of the best things about British summers is the long, bright days. With it being light from the early hours of the morning until late at night, it’s unlikely you’ll need to have the lights on very much. This is especially true if you keep your curtains and blinds open for as long as possible in the evenings.

If you do need to turn on the lights at any point, try to get into the habit of only lighting rooms that are being used – this alone could save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills.

Ensure your fridge is performing at optimum

You’ll want your fridge and your freezer to be working at their best during those hot spells of summer, whether you want to chill some water to cool yourself down after a walk in the sun or just keep your food from spoiling in the heat.

On the whole, fridges and freezers account for around 12% of the average energy bill, as they’re always on and using energy. A fridge that runs well will also use less electricity. Therefore, ensuring your fridge is in top form during the summer months is key. Cleaning and defrosting your fridge will help to keep ice under control and ensure that your appliance is running as efficiently as possible.

Opt for natural ventilation

Having to put up with hot and stuffy rooms is never pleasant, but using a fan for long periods of time can drastically increase your energy usage and costs. Instead, keep windows and internal doors open so natural ventilation can flow through your home. This works particularly well if there’s a slight breeze outside!

That being said, when there’s a heatwave it’s best to keep windows closed during the hottest part of the day. When the air outside is warmer than it is inside, letting it into your home will actually make your home feel hotter. The best thing to do is only open them early in the morning or late evening when the air outside is on the cooler side.
