Cavity Wall Insulation: What You Need to Know

All Posts

A cavity wall serves a pretty practical role helping to keep you warm and dry at home. It does everything from stopping rainwater from penetrating through the outer wall and making its way inside your home. Nevertheless, having a cavity wall which is unfilled can be a huge issue in that this can cause heat to escape as well as being responsible for up to a third of the heat loss in your home.

This doesn’t just indicate that your home’s not as warm as it could be, but it can also be a cause in which your central heating costs are going to be ever-increasing, especially in the cooler, winter months.

With this in mind, here in this blog we are going to explore what you need to know about cavity wall insulation and why it may be a great option for you.

Cavity wall insulation

What is a cavity wall?

A cavity wall consists of two separating thin walls, often made of brick, and known as ‘skins’ or ‘leaves’ with a gap (the cavity) in between them. They’re often kept together by metal wall ties.

Is my home suitable for cavity wall insulation?

If your property was built in the 1920s or onwards, it’s quite likely going to have cavity walls. The cavity itself should be at least 50mm wide and the walls have to be in good condition and clear of rubble in order to be suitable for cavity wall insulation.

If your house was built within the last 20 years, it’s quite likely that the cavity walls will have already been insulated for you. However, it is the case with some cavity walls that those that are frequently exposed to wind-driven rain – are not always suitable for cavity wall insulation.

Costs and savings involved

Typical installation costs of cavity wall insulation is going to be dependent on the size of your property. But regardless of if you reside in a large detached house or a slightly smaller property, you need to be able to make back the installation cost within a couple of years and this is due to the yearly energy bill savings you are going to make with a cavity wall in place.

At UK Energy Management (NE) Ltd, we work nationally to reduce heat loss and reduce the cost of energy for householders. We work with Energystore to insulate homes across Great Britain and offer a funded system. To find out if you are eligible for cavity wall insulation funding, fill out our online form or contact us today. We’d be happy to help.
