Why Insulation Is Just As Important In The Summer

All Posts

Often when you think of insulation, you think of the benefits that it will serve you in the winter. This includes trapping heat inside the house, keeping you and your house warm over the cold months. But what many don’t consider is the benefits of insulation in the hotter months of the year.

Read on to find out why insulation is just as important in the summer.

Insulation In Summer

The main benefit of insulation in the summer is that it can work to prevent your home from overheating. Summer temperatures average around 21 degrees Celsius but can go even higher than this, especially in July and August. This harsh summer heat beating down on your house is going to warm it up quite a lot, so you need insulation to help regulate the temperature, keeping you comfortable and saving energy.

Without insulation, it takes a lot of energy to cool your home, with common methods using fans and air conditioning to reduce the temperature. We use these methods to push cool air around the hot space. Insulation works by slowing the movement of heat between two spaces, creating an air barrier. Because of this, insulation helps to keep hot air out and keep in the cool air that is circulating around your home. Using fans and AC are great to keep cool, but if the cold air they generate can just escape easily, you’ll have to use even more power to try and cool the space.

Solid wall insulation limits twice the amount of heat from getting through as a standard cavity wall, so it is great during the summer months. You can undergo a cavity wall extraction to remove this insulation and install solid wall insulation instead. Your loft is usually the space in your house that is the warmest in the summer, so insulating your loft can keep the heat trapped up there and prevent it detracting from the cool air in your house.
